Too much death, not enough game.

There are no clear choices I can make when it comes to staying alive. Give me a choice, I need some risk and reward mechanics or else it's just going to see pointless to do anything in your game.

I stop on a planet and lose 25 hull and fuel because why? Because this game was made for the Procedural Death Jam?

Wolod responds:

I'm sorry to tell this but you were right... It is random and hard because it was made for Procedural Death Jam xD
After each playthrough you get XP and level ups buff your starting stats. There is a point. You play the game, you learn the rules of it's cruel world and you're level-uping eventually. So on one hand we have some kind of tutorial and on the other hand you are closer to the happy end with the each playthrough (something like Rogue Legacy).

Plenty of things I liked, I liked how your fire rate increased as you took damage in Act 3, I liked the creativity and polish you put into a "simple" concept like a mouse avoider game.

But the thing I liked the most of all, was that there was no true "bad" ending.

You leave it up to the player to decide what the true consequences of his/her actions are and you don't just beat us over the head with if we got the "good ending" or not.

The first time I played through, I chose the contain ending because I didn't really feel like the Dr. would be the suicidal glory type. Lo' and behold, Mary and the organization kept up their end of the deal! If they would use the particle to do terrible things, you don't reveal, but I am glad I played your game and I enjoyed every bit of it.

ItsTheAshtray responds:

NICE! You really picked out some cool details like the fire rate increase. It's very satisfying to find that someone truly enjoyed the story, so thanks!

I don't think that missing a swing should reset your combo, either that or power ups shouldn't be given only for high combos.

I was enjoying myself, just running down the track and murdering guys, right up until I realized I could only get powerups like the horse if I killed 10 people in a row, without missing or getting hit, suddenly I found myself not even bothering to throw my sword or spike the golf carts because those were both very stylish moves that had a delay and put the combo at risk.

The game itself is fun, but the fixation on combos suddenly throws the carefree attitude out the window and replaces it with one of precision and caution, which totally clashes with the craziness of the story and the absurd things that start filling the track.

DBuck-Eye responds:

Hm... I see your point. I'm gonna make some edits tonight to make the combos easier (originally, getting hit didn't reset your combo, but that seems to be the more tolerable of the two reasons for resetting). I also like your power up idea, so I'll throw in random power ups if you haven't gotten one in a while. Thanks for the thoughtful feedback! :)

Your health regenerates while the game is paused... Seriously?

maxman43 responds:

Hmm, I'll have to get that fixed. Thanks for the heads up.
Edit: The fix is now live.

Dearest Lazymuffin.

The Boss is outright insane. Come on, it does unstoppable damage, UNSTOPPABLE DAMAGE IN A DEFENSE GAME.

Other than that the game is really charming (best part of all your stuff!) and it does start to wear on after the 15th wave, but the boss... oh my god why did you think that was a good idea?

"Oh cool the boss! Let's go!" *dies in 7 in-game seconds* "oh kayyyyYYYAAAAAARRRGGHHHHHH!!!!!"

Cute game, horrible boss.

LazyMuffin responds:

This guy sent me a PM saying he figured it out, EVERTHINGS OKAY!

Warble Castle Crashers Warble

I've never played Castle Crashers before, sadly I lack an Xbox360 and my friends lack Castle Crashers, but I find this game to be an actual PLEASURE to play. There are no outstanding flaws that ruin the gameplay for me, I played all the way up to the forest hideout rest stop, and still enjoyed myself.

I couldn't care if this was a tribute or not, it's just a fun game and I loved every second. The only thing that could be better is the animations in general, the characters seem a bit stiff to me, Running, jumping, attacking... they all seem like they were done with the character in that perfect upright position, and there wasn't much redrawing done, but that's just my thought.

Overall, loved the game, you're a credit to indie games.

SeethingSwarm responds:

Thanks a lot!
Yeah I'm not really a master at animation, hehe :)
I did my best to optimize the graphics for gameplay, but still tried to keep it as good-looking as I can.

It's pretty good.

I kept getting a little miffed when my pill would just ram into things after clicking the go button, but overall it kept me entertained and it had a decent story.

Psycho responds:

Glad you liked it.

You can hold SHIFT to stop your ship from moving, and doing that when you're about to hit the GO button can be pretty useful.

Trading hasn't been done for a while. Also CAMEO!

I like the concept, it's original! All the cameos were awesome, but cameo-ing me? Luff <3

It kept my attention, it was fun and there was a great music selection!
Happy Thanksgiving and Radical game!

LilDwarf responds:

Hehehe thank you for making that funny song...it fitted well on the credits :)

Lots of Work and Luff a good game makes :3

Really when I started I like the way you ease us (the player) Into how the game and mechanics work, and It was fun and challenging.

Your story and starting cutscene was funny and made of win, really now how many time do you play AS the asteroid?

Anyway your upgrade system is cool and you really capture the whole "We are one, we are legion" way of the noble asteroid. Really when I got to the level with "The mine" and blew myself apart for my team I thought it was game over until I saw another ally of mine rise to leadership! (Great actionscript and great gameplay!)

My one gripe is when I got to the level before the last, I was PWNZORED by the boss, It was nice letting us continue but even then with half my powerups I had no chance... It was sad really...Someday I'll see one of the endings...someday...

Either Way GREAT game, Cool mid level pep-talks and an awesome story! I can't wait to see your next flash!!!

And it didn't lag either!

AdamSchroeder responds:

Nice review! Thank you very much!

The boss was hard to balance... if you come at him with an armada of allies you would complain about how easy he was to kill. If you try again, try to grab the ally powerups on those last few levels. It will make a big difference.

Yes, I did a lot of optimization in this game. It really shows on the free-for-all level (after the boss) where you can be fighting up to 100 ships at a time.

Totally awesome

Wow, where to start. first off this is one of the best flash-made RPGS I've played in a while, the mixing of sprites and vector art is awesome, and when I noticed that everyones facial expressions change during the conversation I was like "holy shit this guy is serious". Your own music is fantastic and it fits the moods.

Plot wise, during the start with the dragon it was awesome, you reaction system makes the game better in that your not just sitting there waiting for things to happen,

The way the heroes were talking seemed immature but I never saw THAT plot twist coming, I just kept laughing about it!

Anyway now I'm wondering is the main character gonna make it out of this alive? Because so far he looks screwed.

Anyway great game!

Pseudolonewolf responds:

Ah, and someone finally mentioned the expressive avatars, too! I really like those myself, but nobody else commented on them at all... Hm.
Thanks for the good review though!

Yeah, still at it.
